Abdullah Gül University (AGU), Gaziantep University, Gazi University, and Royal Holloway University of London jointly held a workshop within the scope of the project “In/Visible Syrian Immigrants in Turkey: Identities and Cities in Transition.”

Participants of the workshop, part of the project which is also the recipient of the British Academy Global Challenges Research Fund, were Prof. Burak Asiliskender of the Department of Architecture at AGU, Dr. Sinan Akyüz of the Department of City and Regional Planning at AGU, Dr. Sümeyra Ayık, who works on teaching Turkish to foreigners, Dr. Gül Berna Özcan of the School of Business and Management at Royal Holloway University of London, Prof. Çiğdem Varol of Department of City and Regional Planning at Gazi University, Prof. Meltem Karadağ of the Department of Sociology at Gaziantep University, and Dr. Nesrin Seef of the Department of Psychology at Gaziantep University.

Besides organizing the workshop, the research team also held meetings on Syrians with Ali Orhan, Director of the Turkish Red Crescent Community Center in Kayseri, and Nihat Molu, Secretary-General of Kayseri Chamber of Industry.

The “In/Visible Syrian Immigrants in Turkey: Identities and Cities in Transition” project aims at employing a variety of ethnographic research methods such as focus group discussions, in-depth interviews, site observations, and case study comparisons and creating a database with the data thus collected. Additionally, the findings of the investigations will be shared with policymakers and other target audiences through panels, workshops, and national and international publications.
