Organized by VitrA, the panel series titled “VitrA ile Kentin Hayalleri” (Dreams of the City with VitrA), which focuses on needs, expectations and dreams of cities, was hosted by Abdullah Gül University (AGU) in Kayseri following İzmir, Ankara and Adana.
The topic of "The Dream of Kayseri: Using Its Own Industrial Past for the Benefit of the City with Culture and Education" was discussed at the panel which was moderated by the artist Yekta Kopan and where architects Emre Arolat and Gamze Özbal and Prof. Arzu Erdem, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Architecture at AGU, were panelists.
AGU Rector Prof. İhsan Sabuncuoğlu extended his gratitude to the Eczacıbaşı Group, the panelists and the audience who showed great interest in the panel.
Prof. Sabuncuoğlu said: "As a university we have always performed 3 functions which are education, research and integration with society at social-cultural events. We at Abdullah Gül University (AGU) attach great importance to them. We set off with such a conception and believe me that this organization is a precious and important event overlapping with our vision."
Emre Arolat, architect of the Sümer Campus, expressed his gladness with the fact that a historical place was turned into a university and this project was given to them trusting their experience.
Arolat said that during the implementation of the project they ran into various problems but managed to overcome them with the current university administration and added: "They cleared the way for us so that this campus could be evaluated socially, physically and culturally. Is the university in contact with the city? This issue is a little bit related to the nature of the city. In this age, it is necessary to take a look at the city besides the university."
Arzu Erdem said that AGU was not like conventional universities composed of independent compartments but was established with the intention of allowing very different disciplines to work together.
Also commenting on the mission of the Sümerbank Textile Plant Erdem said: "This building has always been very important for the city since its construction in 1935. Because its reason for being was to accelerate the modernization of the city. And now the university continues this mission just like in the past."
Gamze Özbal said that the establishment of the Aircraft Factory, Repair Shop and Sümerbank Textile Plant carved a significant place in the social life of the city and added:
"By the way, there are social places where people frequent actively in their daily lives, located between these industrial structures and residential areas. These places were structured in a way to support people socially and help them develop economically."
"The Dream of the City" is going to end following the panel discussion in Antalya.
