Abdullah Gül University (AGU) organized a program to commemorate July 15, Democracy and National Unity Day.
The program was held at the Rectorate Conference Hall on the Sümer Campus and started with a moment of silence and the singing of the National Anthem. The program then continued with a film screening that depicted the events of the night of July 15.
In his opening speech, Rector Prof. Dr. Cengiz Yılmaz delivered a message of national unity and solidarity. Rector Yılmaz emphasized that July 15 has now become a symbol of our national unity and democracy. He stated, "Especially during times of threat and crisis, coming together as a nation, disregarding minor differences, resisting as banding together, moving forward and acting in a spirit of unity are not something every nation can achieve."
Following the opening speech, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Armağan Teke Lloyd, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, delivered a talk on "Coups from the Ottoman Empire to the Present Day." Dr. Teke Lloyd explained the coups and coup attempts in the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Türkiye, starting from the Tanzimat Period.
Dr. Lloyd reminded the audience of the numerous coup attempts against the Sultans, the representatives of the highest level of political power in the Ottoman Empire. She emphasized that the aftermath of the July 15 Coup Attempt was difficult for our country, stating, "Türkiye experienced one of the biggest and most violent interventions attempting to overthrow the existing government on July 15."
Among the attendees were the rectors of AGU, Prof. Dr. Cengiz Yılmaz, and Nuh Naci Yazgan University, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Fazıl Özsoylu, AGU Secretary General Osman Yıldırım, academic and administrative staff, and students.
