The project of the Abdullah Gül University (AGU) students titled "Contribution of recyclable mask use to waste management and economy" qualified for support by TÜBİTAK, Turkey's science body.
The students prepared their project as a response to the widespread use of masks due to the COVID-19 pandemic and earned the support of TÜBİTAK within the scope of its "2209-A Funding Programme for University Students' Research Projects" in the 2020/2 term.
The project was written by a team of students, composed of Meltem Bedir from Architecture, Ramazan Arslan from Mechanical Engineering, Beyza Bozkurt and Hacernur Uzuner from Molecular Biology and Genetics, and Emin Dürlü from Business Administration, under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Asım Mustafa Ayten, an urban planner and expert in urban and environmental sciences.
The students first developed their ideas in the course "Global 301 Sustainability," which was designed to tackle global challenges and produce some solutions, by assessing the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on urban life. Their project aims to make masks, which now are part of everyday life, recyclable and thus contribute to the economy.
