A programme was organized for the July 15 Martyrs Remembrance, Democracy and National Unity Day at Abdullah Gül University (AGU). Prof. Ayşe Aslıhan Çelenk, International Relations Chair at Erciyes University (ERU), gave a seminar at the event.

The event started with the National Anthem and a moment of silence was observed at the Rectorate Conference Hall on the Sümer Campus. Subsequently, a documentary about the night of July 15 was screened.

The opening speech was made by Rector Prof. İhsan Sabuncuoğlu. The Rector stated that the July 15 was still a fresh and emotional event and in order not to experience other July 15s, it had to be analyzed well.

Prof. Sabuncuoğlu said:

"We are obligated to investigate phenomena from an academic perspective, analyze them and share results with the community and academic world. It is still a fresh and emotional event. And it has a history. It is important to analyze well the period which is said to go back up to 40 years ago, even more. Sociologists, social scientists, academicians and political scientists need to analyze that process well. In order not to have such entities again, new July 15s again, it is a necessity to analyze what happened and make self-criticism."

Then, Prof. Ayşe Aslıhan Çelenk, International Relations Chair at Erciyes University (ERU), gave her seminar about coups and memorandums in Turkish political history and history in general.

Prof. Çelenk said, the July 15 coup attempt did not aim to restore order or correct an impaired structure; on the contrary, it tried to disrupt the order and create domestic disturbance as an attempt to retake power.

Adding that the starting point of the coup attempt was planned by a terrorist group within the army, Çelenk said: "The aim of the July 15 coup attempt was not to restore order or correct an impaired structure. On the contrary, it was an attempt to retake power by disrupting the order and creating domestic disturbance. Its basic difference with previous coups is that its planning was not done by a legitimate authority. The army is a legitimate body, but a terrorist organization cannot be considered as such. Indeed, one of the reasons it failed was the lack of a legitimate base."

At the end of the seminar, Rector Sabuncuoğlu presented a certificate of appreciation to Çelenk.

A large audience besides academic and administrative staff and students joined the event.

Provincial Police Chief İbrahim Kulular, Melikgazi District Deputy Mayor Dr. Yüksel Kahraman, Acting Provincial Director for the Science, Industry and Technology Kamil Akçadırcı, Kayseri District Manager of İller Bank Sönmez Ata, Provincial Chairman of İyi Party Emine Bağcı and Executive Board members of İyi Party were among the invitees for the programme.
